Apple’s New Touchscreen MacBook Pro Costs Up to $14,549
Apple’s new touchscreen MacBook Pro models start at $2,899 for the 14-inch version and $3,399 for the 16-inch version, but configuring the machines with every hardware upgrade pushes their prices well above $14,000.
The starting configurations and U.S. prices are as follows:
14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro: $2,899 with a 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB of unified memory, and 1TB SSD, up from $2,499.
16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro: $3,399 with an 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU, 24GB of unified memory, and 1TB SSD, up from $2,999.
14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max: $4,499 with an 18-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 36GB of unified memory, and 2TB SSD, up from $4,099.
16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max: $4,799 with an 18-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 36GB of unified memory, and 2TB SSD, up from $4,399.
The $400 premium represents an increase of approximately 16% for the entry-level 14-inch M5 Pro configuration and 13% for its 16-inch counterpart. The M5 Max models see increases of approximately 10% and 9%, respectively. This is compared to the previous, non-touchscreen models’ prices immediately before today’s announcement, rather than their lower prices at launch before Apple’s hikes.
At the other end of the range, Apple’s configurator allows the 14-inch touchscreen MacBook Pro to reach $14,249 and the 16-inch model to reach $14,549. Both configurations include the highest-end M5 Max chip with an 18-core CPU and 40-core GPU, 128GB of unified memory, a 16TB SSD, and nano-texture glass.
Storage accounts for much of the expense when configuring. On the highest-end M5 Max configuration, upgrading the standard 2TB SSD to 4TB costs $1,000, 8TB costs $3,000, and the new 16TB option costs $7,000. Moving from 48GB to 128GB of unified memory adds another $2,000, while nano-texture glass costs $150.
The preceding 16-inch MacBook Pro topped out at $10,149 with 128GB of memory, an 8TB SSD, and nano-texture glass. The new model’s $14,549 maximum is $4,400 higher, or approximately 43%, although that comparison includes twice as much storage. Configured with the same 8TB capacity, the new 16-inch model costs $10,549, an increase of $400.
